The protest called for more transparency over the handling of a suspected rape case.

A woman in her 20s reported she’d been attacked outside Epsom Methodist Church in the early hours of Saturday by several men.

Recent police guidelines encourage releasing detailed suspect descriptions including ethnicity and nationality to improve public safety.

Five days on from the alleged attack, Surrey Police says officers say they don’t have sufficient information regarding the suspects’ descriptions.

They are asking for people with CCTV and dashcam footage to come forward and say an increased police presence will continue over the weekend.

Hear what the Lib Dem leader and Kingston MP has to say on the protest.

Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend said: “I am aware there has been increasing concern expressed in recent days following a report of a rape in Epsom last weekend which has culminated in a protest in the town centre.

“I have been receiving regular updates from senior officers since the weekend and I am wholly satisfied that the investigation is both thorough and diligent. Our police teams have been carrying out extensive enquiries and are leaving no stone unturned in trying to establish exactly what took place.

“Any report of this nature is understandably concerning and I fully appreciate in circumstances like this that the local community are keen to have as much information as possible.

“But that must of course always be balanced with ensuring the integrity of the investigation which I am sure the local community in Epsom will appreciate is complex in this case.

“There has been much unhelpful speculation on social media about why descriptions of suspects have not been released. I would like to reiterate Surrey Police’s position that despite the extensive enquiries that have been carried out, at this stage they do not have sufficient information to release descriptions in this case.

“Surrey Police have stepped up patrols in the area and the community will see that increased police presence continue over the weekend.

“The investigation is progressing and I would ask the local community and the wider public for their understanding while our police teams continue their enquiries.”
