It’s after the Met Police confirmed that the bases at Wimbledon and Mitcham stations are to close to the public at the end of the month.

The closest 24/7 police counters are now located at Charing Cross and Lewisham.

The Met Police has previously said it needs to make £260 million worth of savings.

In December, Richmond Council began legal proceedings against the Metropolitan Police and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) following the decision to permanently close the public front counter at Twickenham Police .

Lucy Mayer asked Deputy Leader of Merton Council, Eleanor Stringer, if this is something Merton is considering.

Last Autumn, London Mayor, Sir Sadiq Kahan, who made a manifesto pledge in the run-up to the 2024 mayoral election to keep a “24-hour police front office counter in every borough”, said that the closure of front counters was an “operational decision” for the Met.
