A stretch of the Thames between Ham and Kingston could become the River Thames’s first official bathing area.

A stretch of the river is among 13 new designated swimming sites being proposed by ministers.

The River Swale in North Yorkshire and Little Shore in Northumberland are some of the other locations being considered.

The river at Richmond was popular with swimmers in Victorian times.

Water and floods minister Emma Hardy insists there will be regular quality checks.
