A prison governor says “specialised” gangs piloting drones to fly drugs and weapons into prisons are working up and down the country.

Rob Knight from HMP Manchester says they’re using sophisticated technology to deliver items and “to beat the system.”

HMP Wandsworth is one prison affected, with drones filmed delivering drugs into the facility as recently as autumn 2025.

The National Audit Office has found the government and prison services need to respond to urgent threats like drones.
