The Grade II listed structure was first closed to motor vehicles in April 2019 due to critical cracks in its cast iron pedestals.

It then fully closed to pedestrians, cyclists, and river traffic in August 2020 after a heatwave caused the fractures to worsen.

Today, although cyclists and pedestrians can use it, motor vehicles cannot.

Opponents to the closure say it causes extra traffic and pollution and leaves Roehampton effectively “cut off.”

Transport for London says it is supporting Hammersmith and Fulham Council to find a way to fully reopen the bridge as soon as possible.
