It faces criticism for keeping leisure centre staff on “casual contracts,” limiting their rights despite years of full-time service.
Staff transferred from contractor GLL say they are classified as “workers” rather than “employees.”
Ruth Cashman from Lambeth UNISON says this leaves families in financial hardship.
A Lambeth Council spokesperson says:

“The staffing structure in place before Lambeth’s leisure services were brought in-house included a mix of permanent and casual roles, which is standard practice in the leisure industry.

“The new council-run service, Active Lambeth, is now undergoing a staffing restructure that will introduce a larger number of permanent roles, along with the benefits they provide.

“All leisure staff will have the opportunity to be considered for these roles, and would then move onto council terms and conditions.

“The restructure will also retain some casual positions to support those who need flexible working arrangements, such as students.”
