People who want to settle permanently in the UK are going to have to meet stricter criteria under new government plans.

The Home Secretary’s expected to tell the Labour party conference that immigrants will have to prove their contribution to society before they’re granted indefinite right to remain.

That includes volunteering in the community and having a clean criminal record.

But shadow home secretary and MP for Croydon South, Chris Philp, wants even tougher measures.
