Roger Federer says he “hoped this day would never come” after his long-time rival Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from tennis.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion will leave the sport after next month’s Davis Cup Finals.

Federer thanked Nadal for “unforgettable memories”, while Cristiano Ronaldo says the Spaniard has “inspired millions around the world”.

As well as two Wimbledon titles, Nadal’s won the French Open 14 times and was the 2008 Olympic champion.
