There were reports of plumes of smoke at the former Tothill car park in Elmsleigh Road where its believed flats are under construction.
The smoke could be seen for miles and was clearly visible to airline passengers landing at Heathrow.
Eight fire engines arrived on the scene at around 12.30pm
