One in five children who catch the virus are hospitalised, and on rare occasions, it can prove fatal according to the NHS.

Children are routinely offered the first dose of the MMR vaccine at one year, and the second dose at 18 months.

Two doses of the vaccine give lifelong protection against the virus.
