Several options are being proposed one of which is a ‘north west’ runway similar to the ‘original’ third runway which failed in 2010.
Another option is reviewing a north west runway first proposed in 2019 which would be at least 3,500 metres in length.
A third option which was proposed in 2009 under Labour is a shorter third runway of around 2,200 metres.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:
“I am pleased to have received the initial Heathrow expansion proposals – a significant step towards unlocking growth, creating jobs, and delivering vital national infrastructure to drive forward our Plan for Change.
“We’ll consider the proposals carefully over the summer so that we can begin a review of the Airports National Policy Statement later this year.”
