The 69-year-old passed away in New York in January 2016 following a diagnosis of liver cancer 19 months before, which he kept private.

He had huge links to South West London, particularly Tolworth, where he launched his Ziggy Stardust alter ego in 1972.

He performed as Ziggy with the Spiders from Mars at the former Toby Jug pub which has since been redeveloped.
