It will allow Artificial Intelligence to learn from real conversations between Deaf people and not just interpreters.
It will help translate British and Japanese Sign Language into English and Japanese in real time using new augmented reality technology.
The project, funded by UK and Japanese science agencies, will run until 2031 involving researchers from both countries.
