The prison population in England and Wales has jumped to its highest level in nearly a year.

A total of 88,238 people were behind bars as of this morning, according to the Ministry of Justice.

That figure is up by more than 1,200 in the past two months.

A recent review highlighted HMP Wandsworth as one of the prisons severely affected by overcrowding and poor conditions.

The rise comes despite thousands of inmates being freed early as part of plans to ease overcrowding.
