Going forward, each trust will be ranked quarterly on the standards of its services, from emergency care to mental health support.

The tables see trusts categorised in four segments, with the first reflecting the best performers and the fourth showing the worst.

Those doing the best will be rewarded with greater freedoms and investment, and those underperforming will receive targeted support.

We’ve taken a look at the Acute Trust League Table which ranks 134 hospital trusts.

Moorfields Eye Hospital topped that with a performance category of 1.

The Royal Marsden comes in at 6, Chelsea and Westminster at 28, Kingston at 31, St George’s at number 27.

In Surrey, Ashford and St Peter’s came in at 52 with a performance category of 3.
