It’s the highest honour a council can bestow on an individual or organisation.
It’s awarded to those who have, in the council’s opinion, gone above and beyond for the community.
John Azar was awarded an OBE in 2007 for his work with policing, diversity and community relations.
In July 2019 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate and a Fellowship at Kingston University for Community Engagement, Inclusion and Cohesion in the Royal Borough of Kingston and Race Equality, Human Rights and Community Relations in the UK.
But it’s the Freeman of Kingston that is making him most proud, as Phillip Barr reports.
