The leader of Spelthorne Borough Council is calling for tougher legislation to make shared houses safer and better managed.

Joanne Sexton’s written to Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook about the problems associated with HMOs like overcrowding.

The Minister says the government is working on new renters’ rights.

The council says it is already introducing new rules like the Article 4 Direction which requires HMOs to have planning permission.
