The home secretary says she understands the feelings of communities and councils around asylum hotels but she can’t just shut them all at once.

Speaking in the Commons, Yvette Cooper also announced an independent body to fast-track asylum appeals, and tougher rules on refugees bringing family members to the UK.

Shadow Home Secretary and MP for Croydon South, Chris Philp, had this to say in response.

Reform, and some Tory MPs, say she should look at leaving or suspending the European Convention on Human Rights.
