Counter terrorism police are leading the investigation into a fire at an electrical substation which led to the closure of the UK’s busiest airport.

But there’s no indication of foul play so far.

Heathrow will be shut until at least midnight, with almost 300,000 passengers affected.

Responding to the news that a fire at a substation has closed Heathrow Airport today, Liberal Democrat London Spokesperson and Chair of the Future of Aviation All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Luke Taylor MP said:

“The failure of a single piece of infrastructure should not have taken down the whole airport. This has exposed a shocking vulnerability in a hugely important piece of critical national infrastructure.

“I’ve worked in and around airports for years before entering Parliament and I know that teams will be pulling out all the stops to get Heathrow back up and running again.

“But we all deserve answers as to why this fire happened and why a single point of failure can shut down Britain’s busiest airport.

“The Government should launch an urgent inquiry into the matter as it pertains not just to the resilience of our transport links but also our national security.”
