The event, which has been running for 25 years, provides free sports training for 7- to 16-year-olds in the county.

A bursary scheme, that would provide up to £200 per participant to cover all, or part, of a sports club membership is to be trialled instead.

Youngsters who are in receipt of free school meals or whose parents receive regular universal credit payments, will be eligible.

The matter will be discussed by councillors in the coming weeks.

Councillor Nick Wright, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism at Mole Valley Distric Council says: “Sport is a key way of building new relationships and improving confidence. In-line with MVDC’s strategic priority to support healthy and fulfilling lives in the district, we hope this bursary scheme will help more young people across Mole Valley access the many benefits of participating in sports. It also creates the opportunity to build a lasting connection to the importance of staying active into later life, along with the confidence and social skills that can be gained from taking part in sport.”
