St George’s Hospital has treated the UK’s first patient through global programme.

The treatment is inspired by the results of a global trial, STRONG-HF, which was stopped early because it was so successful.

Heart failure happens when the heart is unable to pump blood properly around the body.

Patients are typically started on smaller amounts of drugs to help improve heart function, with doses increased over several months.

Now, eligible patients will receive “optimal” doses of medicines made possible by frequent monitoring and testing at St George’s.

As well as reducing deaths by 62%, this style of treatment cuts hospital readmittance rates by 30% and reduces the number of appointments.
