The trees are a form of the Norway Maple and have small yellow flowers which appear in spring.

They have been planted in open spaces including Feltham Hill Recreation Ground in Ashford, Staines Park and Knowle Green.

Spelthorne was created in 1974, replacing the urban districts of Staines and Sunbury-on-Thames.

They had formed part of Middlesex until 1965 when they were transferred to Surrey upon the creation of Greater London.

During its 50 years, the Borough of Spelthorne has had 16 political leaders and 53 mayors.
