The partnership will work on new ways to make low-carbon electricity and hydrogen fuel more efficiently.
Students will get hands-on training while researchers test and improve the technology for real-world use.
The three-year collaboration officially started at Surrey on Wednesday, with plans for joint projects and funding applications.
