A man in his 20s is in hospital with serious injures following the incident at around 8.40pm at Tesco Express in Station Approach.
The suspects are described as two white men, around 5ft 6 tall and wearing black tops and balaclavas.
They left the scene and officers are asking for help in tracing them.
Detective Sergeant Leigh Wall, who is investigating the incident, said: “We understand that this incident will have caused considerable concern within the local community. We do believe that this was a targeted attack, and we are doing everything we can to locate the suspects.
“We are appealing for anyone with any information to contact us as soon as possible.”
