The 71‑year‑old was found seriously injured inside a property in Bath Road just after 10am on Sunday and died at the scene.
No arrests have been made.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Denby who is leading the investigation, said:
“This is a tragic incident in which a woman has lost her life. We are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened, and we are keeping an open mind to pursue all lines of inquiry.
“We urge anyone who was in the area of Bath Road, who may have seen or heard anything unusual, to come forward. Even small pieces of information can prove vital.”
Extra patrols will be carried out in the area to provide reassurance to residents.
