Oxford University’s rowing coach has branded the water quality of British rivers a “national disgrace”.

It’s as fears over E coli in the Thames threaten to overshadow Saturday’s Boat Race between Putney and Mortlake.

Organisers of the event have introduced new guidance highlighting the risks of entering the water and advised regular hand washing.

The Environment Agency says sewage spills into England’s rivers and seas more than doubled last year.
