Migrants who are in the UK legally could have to wait up to 10 years before they can settle permanently under government proposals.

The Home Secretary says the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain would be doubled from the current five years.

People would be required to have a clean criminal record and speak English to A-Level standard.
