A council spokesperson said: “Merton Council is supporting residents following a significant fire at Suez Recycling, Amenity Way, Morden.

“The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the (Saturday) morning, has led to the evacuation of approximately 50 residents from their homes as a precautionary measure.

“The majority are staying with friends and family.

“The council has opened a rest centre at Eastways Day Centre, Morden, for those who need assistance.

“The fire is now under control, but crews will remain on scene damping down hotspots.

“Garth Road, between Amenity Way roundabout and Burge & Gunson, currently has restricted access to traffic.

“Residents should stay away from the Suez Recycling Centre and Garth Road Recycling Centre area to allow the emergency services to manage the situation.

“Local residents should keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.”
