Livestock farmers across Surrey are being warned about an outbreak of a new strain of “bluetongue.”

The virus, spread by midges, causes mouth lesions and lameness in hooved animals such as sheep and cattle.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says the new strain, called BTV-3, has been found in the county.

Defra has introduced control zones, to limit the movement of livestock.
