Kingston University is looking for ways to teach life sciences without using traditional laboratory animals.

Kingston does not use lab animals due to “ethical concerns.”

Its new study is trying to identify invertebrate and non-mammalians that can safely be used in labs at other institutions across the country.

Researchers are using zebrafish, fruit flies, and blackworms so students can get practical experience without harming mammals.

The news comes after the number of animals used in UK teaching dropped from 5,771 in 2001 to just 857 in 2022.

Researchers say the small creatures will still be able to help students learn the skills they need for future work in medicine and science.
