Original plans, under the then Conservative administration, to replace the landmark and create a more cycle friendly crossing first surfaced in 2016 leading to a public campaign to save it.

Over 100 people turned out at a public council meeting last night where the future of the roundabout was back on the agenda.

The Lib Dem run authority says it will now look to improve the junction rather than replace it.

The Fountain Roundabout is a much loved landmark. The current fibreglass fountain that sits upon it, was installed in 1982 by the Rotary Club, and replaced an original stone structure destroyed in 1932 during an accident.

In July 2023 Hayatsu Architects, Hortus Collective and 121 Collective won the ‘A Gateway to New Malden’ design competition to redesign the roundabout.
