The busy crossing known as The Trembling Lady, was closed to traffic on Monday after a crack was found in its structure.
The exploratory work involves using ultrasonic technology to scan and review parts of the bridge that are underwater.
A weight restriction has been in place since 1884 and fines have been handed to drivers who break the three-tonne limit since 2024.
