The authority says it’s to better support residents facing isolation, poverty and caring responsibilities.

The Connected Communities plan will swap day centres for hubs and aim to strengthen community links.

“This is a bold, imaginative and necessary step,” said Cllr Mike Rollings, Leader, Elmbridge Borough Council.

“Our current community services costs over £4m and reaches less than 1% of residents, yet nearly 12% are facing real challenges to living well. This transformation means we can support more people, more effectively, and more sustainably and we can do it now. We don’t want to wait any longer in supporting those who need us in our community.

“Contrary to what some are saying, we are not stepping back, we are stepping forward, together. No one will be left behind.”

Cllr Rollings reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting residents, assuring that existing services like Meals on Wheels will remain in place throughout the 18-month transition. While the council will no longer prepare the meals directly, no residents will be left without an alternative meal provision.
