Councillors in Spelthorne have voted to double council tax bills for second homeowners in the borough.
They’ve agreed to introduce a 100% council tax premium on furnished properties that are not used as someone’s main home,.
The change is set to start from the 1st of April 2027.
It means affected owners will pay twice the standard council tax rate on their second house.
The decision at a council meeting came after the government changed authority powers to set council tax for empty second homes.
It’s hoped the move will address the borough’s housing shortage.
