HM Revenue and Customs has published details of 109 cases from across the UK, with penalties totalling over £70 million.
In each case, HMRC says the taxpayer failed to fully disclose their default at the outset of an investigation.
Those named include a Papa John’s pizza franchise in Wrythe Lane in Carshalton which owed £290,875.72 between April 2011 and 2020. Bosses have been handed a fine of £292,875.72
Sakura MK Ltd, formerly trading as Domo Japanese restaurant in Esher High Street owed £42,515 between 2019 and 2023 and has been fined over £29,000.
Building developer, Lionwood Ltd, formerly of Purley Cross, owed taxes of £50,258.21 from August the 1st 2023 to December the 31st 2023 and was fined £42,719.45 by HMRC.
Tao Long from Roehampton owed taxes for what’s described as “property income” between April 2020 and April 2021 of £32,762.40 and was handed a penalty of £22,933.68.
Joseph Gavin Bailey, a roofer, from West Byfleet, owed tax of £30,914.25 between 2018 and 2024 and was fined £21,639.96 by HMRC.
Kevin Hubbard, HMRC’s Director of Individuals and Small Business Compliance, said:
“We are determined to tackle the minority who deliberately refuse to pay what they owe and will pursue all available avenues to recover unpaid amounts.
“Publishing the names of deliberate defaulters sends a clear message that this behaviour has consequences and encourages compliance across the board.”
