Northern England is under an amber one until Saturday while the rest of England has a less severe yellow warning.
The alerts warn the cold weather could lead to extra deaths.
There are also Met Office warnings for snow and ice for parts of England and Scotland this week.
A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) yellow alert for Kent, Sussex and Surrey came in force at noon and runs until 8am on Saturday.
