The oil and gas company has told Spelthorne Borough Council it intends to leave sometime between next year and 2028.

The council owns and leases the headquarters site and says the move should not affect its financial status.

The authority says it will now look at other options for the land.

BP has also agreed to sell its German oil refinery as part of its plan to sell off £15 billion worth of assets and cut its costs.

Cllr Lawrence Nichols, Chair of the Commercial Assets Sub-Committee said, “While this marks a significant change, it is important to emphasise that there is time to plan properly. We recognise that the potential loss of a major local employer like bp will raise concerns about jobs and the wider economic impact on our community. Our priority will be to support residents and local businesses through this period of change, working with partners to understand the implications and identify new opportunities.”
Leader of the Council, Cllr Joanne Sexton added, “This news is unexpected, but I want to reassure our residents and local businesses that we will take a measured approach, working with bp and expert advisors to explore options that benefit our community, support local employment, and make the best use of this key site.”
