Around 300 people had to be evacuated from their homes in Croydon after a collision caused a gas leak.

Three fire rescue units were called to Mitcham Road just after 1am yesterday after a car collided with roadworks.

It resulted in a six-inch gas main being ruptured.

Affected residents were moved to a nearby rest centre and a 100-metre cordon was put in place until around lunchtime.
