A dog walker discovered the buried weapon in a field off Blundel Lane on Saturday the 8th of November at around midnight.
Officers were called to the scene and safely seized the firearm shortly after 1.30am.
Police say the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the weapon is ongoing.
