More than 27% of the population will be over 65 by 2072 according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Stairlift providers, Halton Stairlifts, have analysed 167 areas across the UK, to find out who is best prepared for an ageing population.

They looked at factors including care home availability, pension income and facility quality.

Reigate and Banstead came out top of the table with an overall score of 64.6 out of 100 followed by Southend-on-Sea with 61.7.

Sutton appeared 6th in the table with a score of 57.3.

The study revealed Sutton benefits from a high density of care homes at 14 per 10 square kilometres and a median pay per week of £728.70.
