Habitats & Heritage has received the money from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for a specific project in Wimbledon Village.

The Sir Joseph Bazalgette & the Great Stink of London project aims to conserve the mausoleum of the Bazalgette family in St. Mary’s Church.

The Grade II listed structure’s internal vaulting is suffering a partial collapse.

Habitats & Heritage will use the money to restore the Portland stone tomb and provide public access.

Joseph Bazalgette’s monumental work on London’s sewer system helped eradicate cholera and improve public health.

Habitats & Heritage says it “is deeply grateful for the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which helps ensure that this valuable piece of southwest London heritage is celebrated and preserved for future generations. We also extend our thanks to all the individuals and organisations that have supported the project from its inception.”
