Lib Dem members on the authority want Dorset Hall in South Wimbledon retained as a heritage asset for community use.
A spokesperson for the Labour run council says the building’s Listed status already means there are protections on it.
They go on to say that a Compulsory Purchase is a last resort, and the process takes around 18 months.
