The Met Police says the cause of the blaze in the early hours of yesterday is not suspicious but the findings from the London Fire Brigade’s investigation are yet to be shared.
Eight people were evacuated from flats above the shops but no injuries were reported.
Hotter Shoes, Bureau de Change, Greegs and Lush have been badly damaged and a number of stalls demolished.
Kingston has been home to a bustling market for centuries with the oldest surviving records dating back to the early 1200s.
In January, operator Between the Bridges submitted plans to Kingston Council to revamp the market with replacement stalls, a central piazza, restaurant, bar and roof terrace.
No decision has yet been made on the proposals.
Statement from Bewtween the Bridges:
Between the Bridges are devastated to learn that there has been a serious fire at Kingston Ancient Market Place in the early hours of 6 October. We are in contact with the London Fire Brigade, the Met Police and the Local Authority to work with them to make the site safe and support the clean-up and the recovery of the market.
We would like to thank the London Fire Brigade for their swift action and ongoing efforts. We will be supporting the traders affected by the incident during this difficult time. The market will remain closed for the time being to ensure the safety of the public and traders.
