People in Spelthorne are being asked not to light sky lanterns at all during the ongoing heatwave.

The small hot air balloons are made of paper, with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is lit to help them float.

Residents are already being asked not to light BBQs, camping stoves or open fires while visiting the area’s parks.

Spelthorne Borough Council says these types of lanterns can also start a wildfire and pose a serious risk to wildlife as well
