The inside lane was shut southbound between Malden Junction and Tolworth Junction for almost 8 weeks at the end of May because an accident damaged the barrier. The slip road onto the s/b A3 at Towlorth was also closed.
But drivers complained that the part of the barrier that was actually damaged was much further along from where the lane closure began and was also separated by a slip road. They say there was no need for the lane closure to be so long.
The closure caused queues of over 2 hours at peak times with some residents living nearby also complaining about the debris that built up in the road and the possibility of increased pollution in the ULEZ designated area.
TfL says the decision to close so much of the road was taken following an assessment by engineers.
A spokesperson has told us, “in terms of the length of the closure, the closure will have been designed to create the least possible disruption to people travelling in the area while keeping people safe following assessment by engineers.”
FM Conway, who carried out the repairs, asked Jackie News to direct all questions surrounding the project to TfL.
