Allegations against PC Richard Marus, attached to Central West Command Unit, were proven at an accelerated gross misconduct hearing.
The hearing heard that PC Marus boasted about driving a police vehicle in an inappropriate manner, suggested he was looking forward to using force on members of the public and made disparaging and dismissive comments about people reporting phone crime. He also said he would make “arrest worthy” comments when talking to people he knew, but be more wary around new recruits.
The behaviour of PC Marus was caught on camera by the BBC filming Panorama – Undercover in the Police.
Although not featured in the broadcast in October, extra unaired footage was later shared with the Independent Office for Police Conduct, whose investigation into the behaviour of a number of officers at Charing Cross continues.
Commander Simon Messinger, Professionalism, said: ”PC Marus is the eleventh serving officer to be dismissed for unacceptable conduct at Charing Cross and we continue to support the ongoing IOPC investigation.
“The scale and speed in which we have dealt with this issue demonstrates our commitment to raising standards and addressing cultural issues in the Met.”
PC Marus’s hearing was held on Tuesday, the 4th of August. He was found to have breached standards of professional behaviour in relation to authority, respect and courtesy, and discreditable conduct.
He will be added to the College of Policing’s barred list to prevent him re-joining policing or working for a number of other police-related bodies.
