The developers behind a proposed housing scheme in Hersham say they have offered the greyhound charity based there a “new home.”

A planning application is being submitted by Castlemere Developments for the land in Turners Lane this week.

It’s to build 82 properties on the site which is currently occupied by Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare.

The land is classed as “grey belt” which is deemed lower-quality or less environmentally valuable.

Construction on the site is expected to begin within 12 months, subject to planning approval. It is anticipated the Burhill Meadows project will take two years to complete with the first show home available after 12 months.

There is no word on where the “new home” for the WGW would be located.

Castlemere Developments director Duncan Cooke said: “We are very aware of Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare and its importance to the area. This is why, from the very beginning, we approached manager Carol Cowie to discuss our support in helping it find a new home to suit its needs.

“There has been a lot of misinformation about the future of the kennels and the dogs but we want to ensure everyone is aware of our best intentions to support the kennels. We are supporting the kennels in finding a new home, which will be subject to planning approval.”

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare has previously told Jackie News it will be fighting any application made.
