Viridor Ltd can now increase the amount of waste handled at its energy recovery facility near Sutton to over 382,200 tonnes annually.
That’s an increase of nearly 35 tonnes.
The Environment Agency has approved an application saying specialist officers considered proposals in detail.
Residents have voiced concerns about an increase in traffic and the smell of the site.
The incinerator exceeded its emission limits 916 times between 2022 and 2024.
Viridor said the breaches were caused by a third-party contractor and were very small in scale.
Matt Higginson, environment manager for the Environment Agency in Kent, South London and East Sussex, said:
“Environmental permits set out stringent conditions for all waste sites. We talk to bodies like the UK Health Security Agency before issuing them. The environmental permit for Beddington is set at levels to protect human health and the environment.
“Emissions from the plant are monitored around the clock, and the data is rigorously assessed to identify if any breaches to the permit occur.”
