Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a garden at a house of multiple occupancy on Saturday in Ewell Road.
The cause of the fire is believed to be due to the pit being placed too close to the property.
Firefighters say they should be placed at least three feet away from anything combustible and doused in water when finished with.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This fire in Surbiton, caused by a fire pit, serves as a warning to use fire pits carefully.
“Fire pits should be placed at least three feet away from anything combustible, like property, fences, sheds and trees.
“Don’t leave fire pits unattended and make sure they’re fully out when you finish using them. We always recommend dousing in water to ensure it is fully extinguished.”
