Ministers are hoping to give ‘legal force’ to what they say many do already.
In another development, MPs have suggested tracksuits could be worn to make uniforms more inclusive.
One headteacher in Hounslow, Andy De Angelis, says he has seen benefits in making some changes.
“We are seeing an improvement in kids engaging in PE, because we’re treating the kit as part of the uniform and not as something different,” he said.
“They’re being held to the same standards of wearing their normal uniform.”
